Nobody’s Perfect

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (0)

I saw this line today, “Well, nobody’s perfect!” -Joe E. Brown (Some Like It Hot). It reminded me of what a Priest said to me once in confession. I was pouring my heart out about what a horrible person I was. He popped his head around the privacy screen and he said, “You know what young lady, you aren’t a horrible person, you are actually quite likeable-you are sincere and earnest. What you need to do is “Lighten up!” I was shocked. Lighten up? Really? You could do that? I took his advice.

When we find ourselves in these negative states for an extended period of time we begin to realize, “Wow! This is worse than the actual offense.” It is then that you have a decision to make: Are you going to sink or are you going to swim? If it’s to swim then I suggest you find ways to “lighten up”. Quit complaining. There are alot of people on this planet that have it alot worse than you. Start taking back your control. Do for yourself because no one else will. We come into this world alone. We leave it alone. If we want to live well during our brief time here, we alone are responsible for our attitude.

“There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way” – Wayne Dyer. I believe that.

Are You a Copy Cat?

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (2)

Do you have a mentor right under your nose and don’t recognize it? Step back, take a look around. Who in your world has successfully accomplished what you seek to do? It can even be a virtual mentor, someone you observe from afar. I do this all the time. I have a short list of people I admire. I read everything they write, buy their books and products. I don’t try to dominate anyone’s time. I proactively absorb all I can virtually. Sometimes I ultimately get to meet my role models and sometimes they don’t know I exist. Either way, they are still my teacher.

Let’s face it, there is a lot of gum flapping about innovation but truly a miniscule percentage of the population are innovators. How many google founders are running around in the general population?

Why reinvent the wheel? The recipe for success isn’t a grand mystery. It exists all around us. The problem is it comes dressed in work clothes which knocks out the vast majority of the population. The missing ingredient is you-learn to open your eyes to opportunity and then follow up with the necessary work.

What is readily available is modeling. I modeled my way to where I am today and continue to do so. I observe and mimic business models and people that are effective and successful. Earthcare, the NASDAQ traded company I cofounded with revenues reaching $125 million was simply a copy cat of the roll up strategy that had been successfully executed in several industry’s. It was not rocket science. Anyone could have done it but they didn’t, I did. I got off my duff and I made things happen. What could happen in your life if you got inspired and committed?

Your Time is Now

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (0)

There is no good time. There is no bad time. There is only your time, and it is what you make it.” – Earl Leonard

I read this statement in a local paper. It was referring to a talk given by Earl Leonard, a former Coca Cola CEO to University of Georgia students. He was referring to the dim job prospects. He reminded the students that in 1860 the 40 students that graduated that year went off to fight in the Civil War, only 9 returned home.

I thought it was very insightful. Our time is now and it will be brief. Someone is always going to have it better than you and someone is always going to have it worse-so quit gripping and get on with living!

Perhaps Earl’s statement was extra meaningful to me because my brother died too young. I was changed by this experience. To me, “tomorrow” and “later” were no longer an option. I couldn’t keep deferring my life for whatever excuse I had made up. His death drove home that today is all I have. It caused me to ask every day since then, “Am I using my time wisely and to the best of my ability?”

I hope when you read this that you will pause for a moment and reflect on your life. Are you even aware of what you’d like to have accomplished by the end of it? Are you living it with intention? I find a good question every now and again can make a difference in a life. Carpe diem.

Raise Your Expectations

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (2)

You get what you expect to get. Does the phrase, “Be careful what you wish for” ring a bell? This is the Pygmalion Principle in action. This theory states expectations affect performance. Millionaire Moms is all about helping you raise yours!

The name is derived from a Greek myth in which a sculptor named Pygmalion sculpted a statue of a woman, and fell in love with it. His love was so strong, that it transformed the statue into a real woman. It is this transformative effect resulting from expectations which is the basis of the Pygmalion Principle.

Research in the field of education has supported the theory by demonstrating that students whom the teacher believed were smarter than the rest of the group (when they were actually randomly chosen) performed substantially better than those believed to be “average.” In these experiments, the only difference between the students who performed best and the rest of the group, was the teacher’s expectations. What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Employ this theory to your benefit!

Here’s a funny little example:The attached video is of a guy who wanted to enter a dancing competition. The problem? He can’t dance. Did he let this stop him? No, he transformed his desire to participate into an interesting digital dance and ended up winning.

Let’s live boldly in 2010 and set some creative, mind expanding expectations for ourselves! Share your ideas on the discussion board on our site: http://tinyurl.com/memberdiscussions. Membership is complimentary. We look forward to having you as part of our tribe!

Dreams

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (2)

I have vivid dreams. I have two reoccurring dreams. I can fly. I just start running and then I soar through the air. What fun that is! I look forward to this dream.

Other times I dream I’m driving a car and all of a sudden I can’t see…it’s either raining really hard or the lights go out. I know I am about to crash. I am powerless to do anything about it.

Of course, I prefer the light hearted happy, flying dreams but life is not always easy breezy. We process what is happening in our lives with our dreams.

Last week I had a dream that felt really significant to me. I thought you might gain something from it so I’ve decided to share it.

It was one of those driving dreams. I was behind the wheel when all of a sudden it went pitch black. All I could make out was the outline of pine tree limbs all around me. I knew I was in deep trouble and I would crash. This is when I normally wake up but not this time.

The next moment I am standing in the kitchen of the house I grew up in. My entire family was sitting around the table as they did when I was a child. It felt warm and homey. I was standing next to a lady I didn’t know. She said, “Joyce, you were in a terrible accident. The only way we could identify you was by your watch.” I looked down at my watch. I looked at her. I felt fine. I told her that.

She said, “That’s right. You are fine except you have a new limitation to contend with. The long and short of it is after the accident the Doctors had to remove half your brain.” Now, that didn’t sit well with me! I started feeling anxiety. I said, “But here I am talking to you.”

She said my brain would operate normally when focused on today. I would no longer be able to recall the past. Of course, as soon as she said it I started trying to remember the past. I could literally feel the neurons in my brain reaching for the information but there was nothing there-just empty space where my brain used to be. It was as if I was reaching for a file but couldn’t quite remember what I was trying to access. It was frustrating!

I started panicking and feeling very scared. My heart was beating really fast. My world was confusing now. Who was I? I couldn’t recall. All of a sudden a white dove flew past me into the kitchen wall. It was flailing about wasting its energy trying desperately to get out of the room. I watched it. I realized the bird’s efforts and my own were fruitless. Once I stopped trying to fight my circumstances I felt calm again.

I realized I needed to accept that my new “normal” would be living in the moment. I went from despair to peace. Although I had lost the baseline of who I had been and where the past had led me, I knew I was breathing and capable in this day. There were a lot of people in the room supporting me in accepting my accident and situation. They clearly cared about me. Obviously I couldn’t be that bad! That was enough. I decided I was going to be ok. My past did not equal my future. Besides being truly present in the moment felt significant and deep-it was like I was really feeling and experiencing things for the first time.

I told my husband this dream. He chuckled. He joked he wished certain memories really could be erased from my mind! Who can’t relate to that? We all have things we should let go of or wish others would let go of but instead many of us harbor and nurture these memories as a justification for our current behaviors and actions. The “somebody done me wrong” song!

My dream for you is that whatever pain you’ve experienced in the past be released and replaced with the peace of what today can offer. You don’t need to worry about tomorrow because a string of great today’s will result in a fantastic future! It is a universal law. After all, we are where we are today as a result of the choices we made in our yesterday’s.

Be your best self today!

Your Friend,

Joyce

World Class Thinking

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (1)

As a coach to individuals and corporations, one of the areas I train on is emotional and intellectual competence. It is self imposed limiting beliefs which trip up our ability to excel. The trick is to identify these limiting thought processes and replace with empowering strategies.

I interact with large numbers of people in my travels around the country. What I’ve learned from observing and working with both average and world class performers is there are two belief systems/languages spoken.

The easiest way to describe it is to share an example. Let’s discuss “Free Enterprise” since this is the focus of this column. Answer these questions in your head: Does the philosophy of self employment motivate or de-motivate you? How do you feel about taking responsibility for your results, no matter what the company you currently work for does or doesn’t do for you?

If you have a self limiting/average belief system, you think free enterprise is only for risk takers. And, you may find yourself thinking, “I have too many responsibilities to take advantage of the free enterprise system.” A world class belief thinker believes that free enterprise is a mindset. Free enterprise means you are free to become wealthy. Free enterprise means taking responsibility for your business life.

Even within corporations free enterprise is at work. How do you think CEO’s get to be CEO’s? They treat their career as if they were engaged in free enterprise, finding ways to provide enormous value and stand out from the crowd. If you are a corporate employee it would serve you well to stop thinking of yourself as a cog in the wheel. Adopt a world class belief system and shine!
Why not live life questioning whether your thoughts are helping or hurting you? There could be so much more inside if you are willing to investigate and reflect. Bloom where you are planted by studying how the world class conduct themselves.

There are many ways to accomplish that. Read books, take successful people in your world to lunch and ask them specific questions as to how they achieved their results. Hire a coach like me! :)

Are you time-starved, and always on the run?

During my Secret Service Days, I was also time-starved and always on the go, too….

So, I can relate to being crazy busy yet still needing to look and feel great every single day…. and today I’m going to share some of my favorite tips with you.

The more motivation you have, the more you will keep moving! Just in case you need more motivation, or know someone that may need more motivation, I’ve written these 5 more motivational reasons for you to stay super-motivated and always keep moving

1.  YOU WERE FLEXIBLE AT 1, 10 and 20 YEARS OLD.
You should also be flexible and limber well into your 60’s and 70’s. Keep this in mind:

Your children deserve grandparents that can play with them; not sit grounded on the sidelines with an “injury.” So, today start moving and keep moving! Those little ones deserve it.

TIP: Before you get out of bed tomorrow, perform 1 set of sit-ups. Each day, add 1 more. In 1 month, your abs will be twice as strong, and in no time you will love your new 6-pack!

2.  LOVE HANDLES DISAPPEAR.
Burn calories while consuming less fat and overall calories and you will be buying smaller pants sooner than you can imagine!  Here are a few GREAT resources to get you started:

3 Deadly Food Label Deceits

 3.   BATHING SUIT SEASON
This should always be on your mind. Don’t start exercising the week before, as you won’t get the results you want. Instead, start thinking “bathing suit season is around the corner” in December.

If you program your mind to think “bathing suit season,” you will notice that you’re eating habits will revolve around it! Soon, you lose the temptation for high-fat snacking, and the new YOU will be resisting temptation with no problem.

Here’s a resourceful tip from Katie Ingraham, co-founder of The Healthy Habits Blog:

“Whenever I start to slip a little bit with motivation, I visit www.victoriassecret.com -  looking at those models in teeny bikinis is enough to give me the boost I need to keep working hard so I can look and feel my best! No, I will never look like a supermodel, and I know that- but it’s a great motivational tool that keeps me off the couch!”

4.    SEXIER, SLIMMER YOU!
Say those words a few times. If that isn’t motivation to start exercising, nothing is!  Must Read:

3 MUST READ eating tips for busy people

5.  GREAT REASON TO GO SHOPPING!
Buying new bathing suits, shirts, skirts, dresses, and ‘skinny’ jeans. They are even more fun to shop for when we HAVE to get them because all our other clothes are too big- due to our new exercise program.

Lastly, I would like to leave you with the single most powerful question you can ever ask yourself. I learned this one during my Secret Service days. It worked for me and I KNOW it will do the same for you.In a 24hr day, what one of these sound better…..http://www.healthyhabitsblog.com/2009/05/22/motivation-stick-exercise-program/

REMEMBER:  90% of what you eat kills you. The other 10% keeps you alive.

Unflappable

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (10)

I’ve gone through a number of personal challenges over the past 18 months that have taught me a great deal about myself, my family, my friends and business associates.  My eyes have been opened. It has been a difficult time where I’ve been hurt and I’ve hurt others. Yet somehow, in the end I would change little of it.

Why? I’m finally making decisions based on my needs, values and dreams. I now operate from a place of personal power. I used to blindly do what was expected of me as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a sibling. Conclusions are now drawn based on what is right for my journey through this world. I reflect. I analyze. I chose. Good, bad or ugly. I accept responsibility for it all. I guess you can say I’ve grown up. The struggle was necessary.

You may be thinking, “No duh Joyce, make your own decisions!” but the reality is we all operate on a 5% conscious level and 95% subconscious. What does that mean? It means 95% of what we do is a result of programming by parents, spouses, people of influence in your life.  To be able to step outside of ourselves and think, “Am I making this decision because it is the right one to make or because I’m someone’s ___ (mom, wife, daughter, employee, volunteer, etc)?” Do you find yourself saying, I “should” do ____?” If this is a phrase you say often, it’s a safe bet you are operating at an unconscious level. Basically, others are dictating how you live your life. Is that what you really want?

It can be a real struggle to objectively look at yourself and be completely truthful. In fact, it can be a raw experience. You might not like what you see. It is safer and easier to not rock the boat and play along but in the end the questions will be there: “Did I live a life unexamined? Unchallenged? Was I brave?” Food for thought.

An analogy to this experience is the butterfly. The butterfly must struggle and wrestle to get out of its cocoon. However, without this trial the butterfly’s wings would not be strong enough to allow it to fly. In fact, if you cut the butterfly out of its cocoon to spare it from the pain of trying, it would die unable to take flight.

No one goes through life unscathed. We all get hurt. We all hurt people. It is the nature of being human. I hope that no matter what happens in your world you will remain confident in your ability to survive and thrive. My wish for you is that you too can be “unflappable”!

But the bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it. –Thucydides

What’s Your Genius?

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (1)

Many people falsely believe they are limited in intelligence. How many times have you heard “Oh, I’m not good with numbers” ? The fact is you have more potential then you could ever possibly use in this lifetime. The trick is figuring out what that is and using this genius as much as possible.

Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard is founder of the concept of multiple intelligences. He says there are at least ten identifiable geniuses. Only two are measured by schools, verbal and mathematical.  The other eight are visio-spatial intelligence (art, design), entrepreneurial intelligence (ahem, see yourself there I wonder?:), physical or kinesthetic intelligence (sports), musical intelligence (playing instruments or writing music), interpersonal intelligence (playing well with others), intrapersonal intelligence (understanding yourself at a deeper level…think Deepak Chopra), intuitive intelligence (ability to sense the right thing to do or say), artistic intelligence (creating works of art), or abstract intelligence (physics, science).

Here’s a clue, ever been told you have a knack for something? Figure out your god given talent and structure your world around it. You will be more successful than you ever thought possible!
