What are you creating in your life?

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (1)

“Creation is always happening. Every time an individual holds onto a thought or a prolonged chronic way of thinking, they’re in the creative process. Something is going to manifest out of that.” – Rev Michael Beckwith

Here’s an exercise to help you identify the beliefs that you should consider altering:

- Allow yourself the freedom to examine and question
every belief you currently hold about yourself.

- Open your mind to consider that perhaps the beliefs you
currently hold may be false.

- Consider that some of your beliefs might be preventing
you from making the progress you like.

Here’s the exercise (relax and take your time):

- Name the person who makes you the happiest. Think
about why they make you happy.

- Name the thing you enjoy doing the most. Think about
how you feel when you’re doing it.

- Name a place you love to go and go there in your mind.

- Now name a person in your life who causes you sadness
and pain.

- Name what you least like about your job or family.

- Think about a time when someone you care about
humilated you or deeply hurt you.

Once this exercise is complete, you can see the power of the mind. You went from happy to an agitated, angry, possibly depressed state in moments. This powerful mind power can be your ally in identifying negative behaviors in your life that need altering. You know what needs correcting.

In my next post I’ll cover how to control your thoughts if you desire too. The 3 steps are 1) label 2) replace 3) focus forward.

Focused, Flexible, Fast and Friendly.

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (2)

If you want to be more successful in all you do, incorporate these words into your day to day: focus, flexibility, fast and friendly. These are key traits to accomplishing more and to keeping frustration to a minimum.

Focus: dig deep, not wide. The key to achieving your objectives is to focus on accomplishing the important tasks. The Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) stating 80% of the results come from 20% of the actions applies. Don’t try to do 3 things at once. Stay on task until you’ve completed your objective.

Flexibility: Many of you reading this are moms. As an
entrepreneur, often times we get knocked off course by a child’s fever, a bad report card (and resulting discussions), an emergency trip to CVS for posterboard. While frustrating at times remember for the majority of us it is the actual reason we became entrepreneurs-we wanted the flexibility to keep family first. Just take a deep breath and let this go. I have learned to re-frame these moments as “rewards”. I am grateful I can stop what I am doing in order to serve my children. My children are why I work so hard in the first place. Don’t ever lose sight of that.

Flexibility also applies to your business model. Most entrepreneurs start out thinking their business will be “X” and usually sooner than later they realize they must adjust to “Y”. Let the customer dictate what you should be selling. Ask them. They will tell you.

Fast: The beauty of being a small business owner is you can adapt quickly. If a competitive advantage becomes apparent, act quickly to capitalize on the opportunity. Don’t get set in your ways in life or in business. Keep an open mind.

Friendly: Are you delighting your customer? Successful people are friendly people. Let’s face it, people do business with people they like. Are you and your staff likable?

Try out these words and see the improved results in your day to day world.

“One of the hallmarks of the great ones is their level of awareness as to what they are willing to fight for. They’re willing to suffer and sacrifice to make their visions reality.” –Steve Siebold

Pain & Pleasure

Humans are motivated by two things: the avoidance of pain and the experience of pleasure.

New Year’s resolutions start off strong. The committed person is either ready to start avoiding something (e.g. feeling fat or broke) or inspired to experience additional pleasure (e.g. how it will feel to be thin or earning more income).

The first few days are fueled with enthusiasm. However, the reality starts to quickly sink in that this is not a quick fix. It will require the individual change their bad habits for new ones, maybe think harder than they are used to and basically, cause discomfort. It is in these moments where the ordinary are flushed out from the extraordinary. It’s just too hard and they quit.

The extraordinary among us know that pain is temporary but quitting is forever. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever quit.” Sure, you might experience a setback but that is not quitting. It’s feedback that you might need to come up with additional coping strategies. A setback doesn’t require that you quit your objective. Dust yourself off and get back to it.

Remember what it is you are fighting for. Go back to your “why”. It is the one thing that will inspire you to suck it up and move forward towards the dream life just waiting for you to reach them. Don’t back off of your goals. Write down 10 reasons why you will do whatever it takes to make my vision a reality. Do this before you waiver so it can act as your life jacket during the low moments. Dig deep my friend! It will be worth it in the long run.

Insights from a 90 Year Old WWII Vet

Posted by: joycebone | Comments (1)

Maurice “Vic” Duvic, 90, Author of “Forty Missions & Home” and I spoke about his book and long life. Vic, a war hero and member of the greatest generation shared with me what it was like flying 40 war time missions as part of the North African Allied forces, surviving, coming home and becoming the father of 8 children. He was called back to active duty and served 21 months in the Korean War.

He was 22 year old enlisted man stationed in Florida enjoying a fun day at the beach with his buddies when they heard the words that would change their lives, “Pearl Harbor”. A trained pilot he flew 40 wartime missions before it was all over. I inquired if he got butterflies in his stomach before leaving to drop bombs? He said he just hoped he’d come back each time. He also mentioned the pilots used to tease each other before each mission. It was their way of alleviating the stress at hand. The book is written primarily from the diary he kept during those years. It is also full of interesting pictures, comics, newspaper clippings and musings. I found out something new- less than 25% of all enlisted soldiers’ ever saw combat in WWII.

Vic was awarded the Silver Star for his service. On November 6th, he was one of the honorees at the unveiling of a major expansion of the National WWII museum in New Orleans, his home town. In attendance included Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks. Of course, I had to ask him about the day. His reply, “It was mostly political types congratulating each other. It was hot and I got sunburned”. This made me laugh. He also added he appreciated the great lengths the organizers went to in order to create the event. Brad & Tom didn’t seem to impress this old timer very much!

When I asked him about his life he told me he graduated high school at the height of the great depression. I asked how this impacted him? He said he got a job as a stenographer making $90 a month. He figured out if he worked for the government he could make $120 month so he began working in the immigration office. He noticed lots of people coming through. Most people were unaware of the brutality and hardships they had been endured.

We discussed his 59 year long marriage and raising 8 children. He said it was fortunate they both had the same ideas on how to raise children and this saved a lot of trouble. They lived in Mississippi during the height of segregation. They felt they had to do their part and pulled them out of Catholic school to attend various public schools. He noted he traveled a lot and that his wife had to work really hard coordinating carpool for the various schools his children attended.

Vic mentioned his generation having gone through the struggles of the great depression over compensated as parents trying to make sure their children didn’t go through similar hardships. He said the end result was “the 60’s”. The children of the 60’s were indulged and the results were clear to everyone. He didn’t think it did them any favors.

I inquired what was the toughest part of getting older? He said in the past ten years he’s slowed down and can’t do everything he used to enjoy doing. His biggest disappointment is the fact he can’t get out and put up his bird houses up anymore. He was an avid bird watcher. Other than that, he had no complaints.

In closing I asked him for his pearls of wisdom from an adventurous and well lived life. He chuckled and said, “I’m not a philosopher”. I wasn’t going to be deterred that easily as I really wanted to know what a 90 year old war hero who raised eight great kids valued? He ended with the quote found in his book, “It’s not about the destination but the journey.” Well said.
